  1. Wow, I never noticed his head before… it’s a Wopper!

  2. So is Bob Crow, who on the phone last night to BBC news criticised the bonus. Bob Crow is a mere hypocrite on a pay of 160k a year plus expenses, and he hogs up a council house when he can afford to go private and therefore pays only half the market rate that he would pay for his 3 bed if he went private.

All these union bosses themselves are overpaid, but at least Steven Hester actually does an important job, unlike mouthpieces like Bob Crow and all the rest.

  3. I don’t disagree altogether that trade union full-timers are paid rather more than they should be as workers’ representatives, however the salary ratio of union general sec to average union member is far, far lower than that of CEO to average employee.

  4. Fat-cat trade unionists?: he hogs up a council house when he can afford to go private

No, no no. This is thoroughly, utterly, completely wrong.

The horrible, divisive idea of “social housing” as a “safety net” is a good part of the reason we are in such a mess.

  5. #4 – Is that the new policy?

  6. Is what the what what?

  7. Labour employed him and set up his contract

  8. #2 At worst, Bob Crow is a mouthpiece only for himself. The question I ask, #2, is who are you a mouthpiece for? Presumably it is glued to the genitals of everyone who works in the City and their representatives in Parliament. Good job they will all be redundant soon.

  9. “Presumably it is glued to the genitals of everyone who works in the City and their representatives in Parliament. Good job they will all be redundant soon”.

That would put an awful lot of working-class people out of a job.

  10. #2 “at least Steven Hester actually does an important job”.

Does he?? How does he contribute to human well-being? How would my life, yours, or that of any ordinary person be impoverished if Hester vanished into thin air??

  11. Shame the poppy isn’t lower … (would make an ideal target)

    Greedy? .. Yes without doubt.

But being as popular as he is now he will not be able to eat in public now unless he’s really stupid …. Would you cook food on minimum wage for the likes of HIM ??? Answer’s on a postcard to…

  12. He looks like David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. I bet he could sing “Money” with conviction!

  13. The Looter:
Labour employed him and set up his contract

But Labour said the RBS board had the freedom to determine bonuses every year.

    “Start Quote

We know now that the bonuses are agreed every year on a rolling annual basis”

    Chuka Umunna Shadow business secretary

“The deputy prime minister somehow insinuated this bonus results from a framework put in place by the last Labour government,” shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna said.

“This is complete and utter nonsense and has been confirmed by RBS because we know now that the bonuses are agreed every year on a rolling annual basis.”

  14. This is only the half of it. Hester’s supporters repeatedly assert that he is ‘doing a good job’. Maybe, but not for state which is effectvely his employer. The share price has plunged because his ‘strategy’ is to sell-off profitable parts of the bank, cut lending and keep hold of the dross.

In effect the management of RBS is another bail-out of the private sector, handing assets the state owns over to them at firesale prices. No wonder he has so much support from other bankers.

And the head of investment banking, Hourican? He’s in line for a much bigger, £5.6mn bonus

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/banksandfinance/9039759/Head-of-RBS-investment-bank-pressed-to-waive-5.6m-bonus.html

And he’s doing ‘such a good job’ they’re closing down the investment bankig division which he heads.

  15. #2 Actually Bob Crow has led the RMT, elected by members and with terms and conditions set democratically by members, since 2002.

The RMT membership when Bob Crow was elected in 2002 was 57,000 and is now well over 80,000 as at 2008.

Whatever arguments the left would make about trade union officials salaries, I would argue if you based them on “performance” measures as you do on the right, Mr Crow is well deserving of his pay if you look at the growth of the organisation he leads in terms of membership numbers, power and influence.

  16. The position even now of New Labour and the awful Milliband mean that while they should be knocking seven shades of shit out of the tories they’re twiddling their tweenies in the dark. It’s painful to watch;Ed Balls is just as bad.

  18. If RBS had been left to ‘go down the shitter’ instead of the likes of Mr Hester working hard to try to sort out the mess (remember he wasn’t a banker before he was appointed) we’d be even more fucked than we currently are! (And no I’m not a banker!)
