  1. This proves beyond doubt they can’t be anti-Semitic. Bagels served afterwards.

  2. Cynical and predictable.

Will they also be celebrating the sacrifice of Mordechai Anielewicz or Glazman?

  3. Why not? People who are committed to remembering Edelman’s role in the ghetto uprising usually have no problem in acknowledging the role of Zionist resisters such as Anielewicz in Warsaw and Glazman in Vilna. Or indeed Glazman’s commander, the communist Yitzhak Wittenberg.

Though Zionist commentators have been less keen to acknowledge Edelman’s leading role, and have not forgiven this outstanding socialist, internationalist and defender of universal human rights for having the temerity to maintain his pre-war ideological opposition to Zionism until his dying days. The abuse heaped on Edelman by Israeli politicians and press over the years, strangely did not have the affect of encouraging him to reconsider his core beliefs.

When Edelman died there were obituaries across the media internationally. It seems quite right that his life, his thoughts, his actions, should be celebrated.

What is sadly predictable is that pro-Israel Jewish student societies have not organised memorial meetings about Edelman as far as I am aware. Had they invited me to speak I would have done so as readily as I accepted the invitation to speak from the Palestine /society at SOAS.
