SUN ATTACKS ON BROWN BACK FIRE

Filed under: Media — Andy Newman @ 3:42 pm

Personally I thought that Gordon Brown did show some coutrage and personal integrity in ringing Jacqui Janes personally to apologise for his poor hand-writing. And  a hand-written letter is a sign of respect, not an insult.

So it is interesting to see the recent poll by Politics Home shows that sixty five percent of voters think the Sun’s reporting on the letter sent to Jacqui Janes became an inappropriate attack on Gordon Brown. About half of voters are now more inclined to defend the Prime Minister.

The story - which many saw as part of a political campaign to undermine the Prime Minister – appears to have backfired, with just under half of voters saying they are now more inclined to defend Mr Brown. More than three times the percentage of voters (thirty one per cent) say that this episode has made them think more of the Prime Minister than think less of him (9%). A comparable proportion (twenty eight per cent) say that the episode has made them think less of the Sun.

  1. still doing it inh order to get the Tories to break up the BBC after election

What Iam surprised about is Labours failure to compalin about the pro Tory bias of the Today programme - which is relentless in attacking Labour and rarely if ever attackls the Tories

Should the Tories win day one will be complaints of British Bolshevik Broadcasting Company and Today will back off

allowing Cameron to smash up a silence any opposition just like in Italy

just who does own the press

    ps Read the Morning Star

    Buy it or lose it

  2. All pretty nasty stuff.

God knows I am no fan of GB or his nasty little government at all but this all left a really nasty taste.

It was a purely political set up and I found it very bizarre that Ms Janes felt that the Sun was the appropriate first port of call for her grievances, and even more bizarre that the subsequent phone call was recorded and broadcast. Whose idea was that?

I did feel somewhat sorry for GB but given the way he, his party and his government have routinely treated dissenters I hope it might just give pause for thought the next time they run a smear campaign against an opponent.

  3. # 2 Triage

Yes I agree with your comment.

As a minor aside my handwriting is pretty untidy too, but so what.

One problem with this poll is that it was conducted by e-mail, which of course limits it’s respondents to those with access to a PC, laptop (or some mobiles).
Nevertheless it is further proof that the trash media does have it’s limits.

  4. I feel no sympathy whatsoever for Gordon Brown. Both he and Tony Blair were keen to suck up to Murdoch and the Sun when it suited them. Blair flew half way round the world at one point to get Murdoch’s backing for New Labour. The Sun is to newspapers what pit bull terriors are to dogs and I for one feel no sympathy to see Gordon Brown getting his hand bit. Let’s not forget New Labour’s courting of a newspaper which called miners scum, which lied about Liverpool football fans at Hillsborough and is in general a racist anti-trade union rag!

  5. Wow - so the party line is that New Labour are groovy despite being the party of BUSH BLIAR US IMPERIALISM!

Are you going to delete all the comments that don’t toe this new “vote labour, they’re fab” line then?

  7. Interesting though that in another question over whether it has affected their view of Brown, 9% say worse but 46% say no change because they had a low opinion of him anyway…

  9. Hmm, interesting, so you’re not really deleting comments where people troll ya, just when people point out a certain politicians employment status. Lols, and indeed roffles!

  11. Such blatant examples of attempted character assassinations by the press simply won’t wash anymore. The Sun’s false triumphalism in 1992 and the self-parodying quality of the Mail, Express etc. have simply disseminated the nature of corporate media far more than left-wing critiques of their influence over politics ever could have.

Obviously the media will always have an institutional bias, but they have to watch how *they* are perceived far more now - the alternative is to titillate the prejudices of their own readerships while declining sales and influence leave them sidelined from mainstream politics.

  12. the Mail, even telegraph even now condemed the Sun

    why because

Murdoch junior has given up on print media and wants to dominate TV via Sky by breaking up the BBC
